It’s a little crazy to think how long denim has been in existence and how much it has stood the test of time. Besides it’s durability, it’s one of thee most versatile and fashionable item anyone can own, and should own in my opinion. Can you believe that denim started off as a workers uniform? The history of denim is quite interesting and even political at that. It served as a symbol of youth rebellion and then became what it’s mainly known for; a fashion statement. Denim has undergone massive transformation over the years, from colour, style, texture, shape, proportion and even texture, but somehow it has still remained an everyday staple for most people.
What’s great about denim is that you don’t have to break the bank trying to find a good pair that suits you. Pretty much every store you walk into offers a denim range, making it easier to switch up your style and try something new at any given moment. This post is to encourage those of you that can’t seem to steer away from the infamous “skinny denim” style. My advice to you would be to start by making small changes and don’t shoot for radical transformation. This looks serves the purpose of this post and will hopefully encourage you to pick two or three styles that seem slightly out of your comfort zone the next time you go shopping.
Choose a plain colour denim
By plain colour I mean choosing a denim that is not shaded with different tones and variations. When searching for a new style try stay away from denim that has heavy manipulation such as ombre’ colour effects, embellishments, applique, stressed-look, ripped and cut-outs. By gravitating towards a plain look, you give yourself the opportunity to play around with items in your wardrobe and not feel intimidated by the denim which should be the hero item. You are also more likely to wear something you have confidence in styling or you feel can easily be worked into your wardrobe.
Choose a denim with a slight detail change
Don’t stretch yourself too far, because trying a new style can be quite overwhelming, so gradually work your way up trendy denim you might like by taking baby steps. Start by purchasing denim with a slight detail change, for example the denim I’m wearing above. It has a slightly flared leg and a subtle play on proportion, nothing is exaggerated which makes it easier to style and work with. The slightly cropped length and flare are just enough.
Wear one tone from head to toe
Although it might seem like you’re blending in, wearing a single shade is a simpler, cleaner approach to putting an outfit together. In fact, when you keep your overall outfit within the same colour hue, the outcome can be just as striking as wearing a bold pattern or vivid colour.
