It's Me Style

Old school comeback: Brands you should be shopping

Once again the pendulum swings and it’s out with new and in with the old. A fundamental question in fashion that could serve as one hell of a debate is: Can you actually throw out any items of clothing with the constant changes happening in fashion?! Fashion is forever changing and evolution of design and style always seems to draw inspiration from what has passed before it looks to the future. Before you know it, the likes of supermodel Gigi Hadid and reality TV star Kylie Jenner will be sporting a throwback look and it’s now considered fashionable to wear your Nike Cortez sneaker out in public again. Today’s post is dedicated to the “comeback kids” in the athlesiure space, and I must admit this trend has me all up in my feels (as the cool kids say), because of my understated obsession with active-wear and the level of comfort this trend offers ( mom life win).
The rise in popular culture, well-placed support from both influential celebrities and reality TV stars, style bloggers , smi’s ( social media influencers) and of course, the undeniable power of social media marketing have made it increasingly difficult to ignore this trend. For those of you who might consider yourselves fashion laggards ( late to adopt a trend), then in a nutshell all you need to know is everything old has become new again. What’s great about this trend is that you can jump on board with great ease because you most likely have one or two items in your wardrobe that have been waiting for a throwback.
In my time ( gosh that made me sound old), the hippest active-wear brands were the likes of Fubu, Soviet, Levis, Puma, Nike (especially the Cortez sneaker) and Skechers just to name a few.
The renewed obsession for all things old school amongst pop culture has seen the revival of styles from the past and the re-emergence of once popular brands increase. With 90’s fever gripping the world, alongside sports luxe dominating industry trends, it was only a matter of time before some classic active-wear names made a resurgence.
Here are a few old-school brands you should be shopping right now:

Fila

Although this brand hadn’t gone completely off the radar thanks to endorsement deals with star athletes, and now endorsement deals with the popular reality star and “IT”girl Kylie Jenner. Fila continues to harness its throwback appeal, with a range of classic and original pieces, from body suits to sliders.

Champion

A true 90’s classic brand that has released new styles with a play on retro-classic in t-shirts and sweaters. I currently have my eye on a lavender tee from Vintage gems that I’m hoping no one will get their hands on before me.

Kappa

Last but not least the brand I’m sporting in this look. A longstanding official uniform provider for multiple international sporting teams, the Italian sportswear brand is renowned for adapting and translating its distinctive silhouettes for the street. Stylish sister  duo Kendall and Kylie Jenner are both fans of the sportswear brand – with the brand regularly featuring in their paparazzi shots and Instagram feeds.

About my look

I must say it was pretty easy to put this look together because of the direction of my post. My aim with this look was to showcase old-school style and silhouette, with a slightly modern tweak that boasts comfort and ease.
Three staple items  1) Statement tee from an old-school active-wear brand  2)  Mini skirt with a 70’s inspired look and feel. The oversized pockets of this denim give it an understated vintage nuance 3) Classic sneakers , choosing to pair it with the infamous Converse All stars. Just a tip: When you tie theses bad boys do it with a little flair, and wrap the laces around the top half of the shoe.
