It's Me Style

3 failproof ways to pair a dress with sneakers

The unexpected combination of sneakers and a flowy dress, is it a yes or no for you?! Hopefully you said yes, but if not by the end of this post I’m sure I’ll have you thinking otherwise, if this style story isn’t doing enough to convince you. Before I get into this post let me start by giving credit where credit is due, and thank fellow blogger Amy Scheepers of Fancy Pants The Blog for the inspiration behind this post. She recently did a series on her blog called ” Wear it with anything”,  styling her white pair of Chucks with just about everything under the sun. Of course I wasn’t about to attempt to do the same, so I decided to focus on how to pair a dress with sneakers.

This trend has pretty much blown up on social media and a part of me hopes that it will be become a classic look that will never go out of style. I’ve seen a few celebrities and style bloggers really push the boundaries on this look, choosing to style feminine tight fitted bodycon dresses with sporty runners. What’s great about this trend is that it does not discriminate, it doesn’t have a specific type of dress and sneaker in mind, so feel free to grab that dress you last wore to a cousin’s wedding, throw on a chic blazer or a denim jacket, and finish it off with a pair of trendy sneakers.

If you’ve been searching for a new way to style your dress, and one that doesn’t involve yourself in sky scraper heels than please follow the pointers below:

1. Sock Game

Please, pretty please don’t wear socks with your sneakers or at the very least don’t let them show. You would think this is a no brainer right?! But there’s a time and a place for the ‘dress and sock’ look and this is not the moment. Can you imagine thick white socks peeping through in this look?! If you’re not comfortable with the idea of going cold turkey like me, then please make sure that you wear secret socks or you can choose to neatly fold in the socks so they aren’t visible. I promise this has the ability to make/ break this look so please heed my advice!

2. Dress length

Make sure your choice of dress is not a floor length one, so try sticking to dresses that are above the knee or just below the knee. The play on proportion is very important for this look to translate well, so the aim is to balance out both pieces and not let the one overshadow the other. A floor length dress will definitely tip the scale to one side, but if you find yourself with only maxi dresses then I’d advise that you scoop up one side of the dress and tie a loose knot to create a little room for the sneaker to feature.

3. Sneaker game

Anything goes: rubber-soled kicks aren’t just for marathoners they’re considered very chic and would totally be appropriate for this look. I picked out this pair of Converse sneakers because it would not offset the dress seeing that it’s one tone. I felt I needed to balance out the floral print of the dress and not create more busyness by wearing a sneaker with a print or graphic. Hightops, lowtops, slip-ons, and more— go for it and don’t put any limits on yourself. The only thing I would say is balance out the colours and try to create a cohesive look, don’t think matchy-matchy but try make sure the hues work well together as a complete look including the blazer or whatever other item you choose to cover up with.

A special thanks to Starbucks for allowing us to shoot this look here, I really appreciate it! If you ever find yourself in Melrose Arch please make sure you grab a cappuccino there, you seriously won’t regret it!
